Historic Jacks Valley Ranch, Former Home of Casino Magnate, Hits Market
The historic Jacks Valley Ranch, which is located close to Nevada's capital of Carson City, is listed for $15 million.
The history of Jacks Valley Ranch predates the founding of Nevada. The casino magnate John Ascuaga and his wife, Rose Ascuaga, are selling their estate, which comprises a 1,230-acre thriving cattle ranch that dates back over 160 years. In 2020, Mrs. Ascuaga passed away, just reaching her 87th birthday. At ninety-six, Mr. Ascuaga passed away the next year.
Ascuaga relocated to Sparks and started working at the Nugget Café shortly after graduating from college. He claimed that this experience gave him his first taste of the hospitality sector while working as a bellhop at an Idaho resort. Later on, he would buy the little coffee shop and build the brand into one of the biggest casino resorts in Northern Nevada.
Ascuaga owned and managed Sparks' John Ascuaga's Nugget for over 50 years, steadily growing the resort into the huge facility it is today. In October of 2013, Ascuaga sold the casino resort.
History of Jacks Valley
In 1969, Ascuaga acquired Jacks Valley Ranch. The legendary property has been owned by a number of other well-known Nevadans, including oil magnate Robert Lytle, millionaire philanthropist Max Fleischmann of the Fleischmann's Yeast company, and Richard Kirman, the seventh governor of the state.
Jacks Valley, a historical location, is where John Wayne shot "The Shootist," his last motion picture. Wayne, referred to as "The Duke," was a beloved figure in Hollywood Westerns.
The majority of the land was permanently protected by Ascuaga during his ownership by being placed in the Nevada Land Trust. The charity assisted Ascuaga in obtaining a 1,169-acre conservation easement that prevents additional development on the property.
"My desire has always been to preserve the character of Jacks Valley and to maintain the ranch as a working ranch,” Ascuaga said in 2015 after the conservation easement was established.
The Ascuaga family's primary home was Jacks Valley Ranch, which is only a short drive from Carson City and five air miles east of Lake Tahoe. Ascuaga reared his kids there; Stephen and Michonne would later work at the Nugget and be integral to its ongoing growth and management.
Details of the Listing
The main house in Jacks Valley Ranch offers three bedrooms, two full bathrooms, two half bathrooms, a study, and an attached two-car garage. In 1963, the 5,428-square-foot house was constructed.
The other three residences are older, having been built in 1942 apiece. Each of them has two beds and one bathroom. The land includes 4,112 acre-feet of deeded water rights, 737 acres of irrigated pasture, and five barns.
Crucially, for five of the eight days in a cycle, the property is allowed to redirect part of Jacks Valley Creek's flow. The property's natural springs are kept full and the water tank is refilled by the tributaries.
